Discovered this new resource for teaching social studies in our domestic preparatory university.

By: Kristine "Daisy" West

On my daily quest to add new resources to aid me in my homeschool teaching journey, I came across this website, Social studies with New York Times!

This segment featured on the New York Times website equips the teacher with multiple articles from NY Times content to choose from and provides a warm-up and lesson plan.

How great is that!

I tested the lesson plan by choosing the news article featured on the 18-year-old Major in Earle, Arkansas. This article was a good fit for my domestic university based on the relatability of my learners. Currently, I have students that are middle school and high school age. I utilized this article and lesson plan to showcase the young Major as a community leader in hopes his story would inspire my learners to use their ideas to make a change.

After reading the article featured in New York Times, I had the students answer the questions included in the NY Times featured lesson plan. Students will also look up issues in our city and make posters and a campaign to run for office. The students completed a rough draft and shared their presentations highlighting the community issues they plan to improve in our city for the campaign via posters and slogans. I then had them critique each other's works based on a rubric to provide them with community feedback and gain new perspectives to sharpen their campaign strategies.

It is now week 2, and the learners are returning to their campaign projects with the new information shared from the student critiques. They will have the opportunity to fine-tune their campaigns to see if they can win the hearts of the voters. This lesson plan engages the students and brings up potential school ideas centered around student council.

See what you can do with this resource! Social Studies with NY Times.

I hope it can aid you in your journey as a teacher leading your domestic preparatory university.
